William J. Tolley

Professional Overview

Currently, I serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Washington and Lee University while I am in the final stages of completing my PhD at Arizona State University. My research is centered around systems and network security, focusing on the design and analysis of privacy-focused technologies and countermeasures against censorship and surveillance.

I believe teaching transcends the mere transmission of knowledge; it is about immersing students in challenging problems that provoke deep thinking, adaptability, and creativity. My pedagogical approach integrates my research insights with practical experiences, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and their impactful applications in real-world scenarios.

Future Aspirations

I am actively seeking a tenure-track position at a liberal arts college starting in Fall 2025. My aspiration is to foster an engaging, collaborative environment where students evolve into active thinkers and problem-solvers. I aim to equip them not only with essential technical skills but also with the mindset to apply their knowledge meaningfully in an increasingly complex world.
